I played football for Coach Newberry my senior year in the fall of 1962. It was my second year to play for the SMA Bears and Coach Newberry's first year to coach. My first year in 1961 we had approximately 40 players on the team and finished dead last in the league. In Coach Newberry's first year we lost the championship by two points and finished the season with approximately 18 total players on the team with most of us going both ways.

Coach Newberry was one of the greatest influences I have had in my life. Coach Newberry demanded a 100% effort with no quit. You played with all your heart or you did not play.

I have thought of Coach Newberry many times over the years particulary when I felt like giving up. The life lessons I learned on the field with Coach Newberry are with me today.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. He was a giant in my life.
