Obituary for Don M. Marshall

Don Marcus Marshall slipped away gently from the loving arms of his earthly family to the everlasting arms of his heavenly father on June 2, 2013 at the age of 89 years, after a heroic battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born on August 25, 1923 in San Antonio, Texas to Edgar Marshall and Florence Bell (Wilson) Marshall. Don was a self made man, on his own by the age of 17. He married Bertie Idell Carson on August 17, 1940 and soon after he left for World War II. Upon his safe return home, he began his own paving construction business and named it Marshall Construction Company. This was successful living for him throughout his life. During his 20’s, he rode motorcycles and drove with speed at competitive cycle events. Bertie was always his partner, holding on for life! Don and Bertie were married 73 years, through good times and hard times… they stayed strong together. Don’s hobbies included fishing and hunting with family and friends, he often spoke about his experiences with his son on hunting trips in North America, Amazon jungle, Africa and Canada. He raised Appaloosa horses and was Director and President of both the National and Texas Appaloosa Horse Clubs and was inducted into the National Hall of Fame. He rode the Chief Joseph and Alamo Trail rides on registered Appaloosas for 24 years. He was a Director and Director Emeritus for the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Don belonged to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department Support Division and retired after 48 years. During that time he was also active in the Bexar County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. He will be solely missed by his family and loved ones. Don was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter, Stacey Marshall. He is survived by his loving wife Bertie Marshall; son, Don E. Marshall Sr. and wife Sandy; daughter, Jennifer Kopeck and husband Robert; grandchildren, Donald E. Marshall Jr., Daryl Kopeck and wife Dawn, Damon Kopeck and wife Karen, Deana Kopeck and fiancé Keith; six great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; and many loving friends.
