Obituary for Wayne Broadway

Wayne Lewis Broadway entered eternal rest on January 4, 2023, at the age of 86. Wayne was born October 9, 1936, in Wilson County, to Ara Denning Broadway and Justus Barnes Broadway.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings. Vivian Veda, Mary Edith, Justin, James Abner (J.A.).
He is survived by his wife Shirley Broadway; children Tracey and Bobby Young, Doug and Christie Broadway; Grandchildren Blake Young, Brooke Young, Brittany and Christian Kahl, Dalton Broadway and girlfriend Kaitlin King; Great Grandchildren Noah Kahl and Remington Broadway.

He grew up in Stockdale and graduated from Stockdale High School in 1959. After spending a short time in the Army, Wayne worked for trucking companies, Morgan Buildings and later retired as an equipment operator from Wilson County.

Wayne married Shirley Hassmann on December 8, 1962. They started their marriage in San Antonio. After having two children they desired a move to a smaller town and bought a couple of acres in La Vernia. It was in La Vernia that they made life-long relationships. They enjoyed spending time with friends at the La Vernia Ice House. They later started their early retirement venture, La Vernia Liquor Haus, which was the sole liquor store in La Vernia for almost 15 years. Wayne looked forward to his morning cup of coffee at Mini-Mart and catching up with friends.

Upon retirement from the Liquor Haus in 2012, Wayne and Shirley spent time with their cattle at the farm in Denhawken until heath issues kept them at home. Wayne still enjoyed games of solitaire and watching episodes of Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and other old westerns.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Heart to Heart Hospice for their care and compassion during Wayne’s final days at home.

Tracey and Brooke would also like to thank Caring Senior Services and friend of the family Shirley McLeod, for their dedication and support during Wayne’s final days, so that he could be comfortable in his own home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the La Vernia Jr. Livestock Show Buyers Pool.
