Obituary for Roberta Ruth Childress (Cook)

Roberta Ruth (Cook) Childress passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the age of 87. She was born March 30, 1928 in San Antonio, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hill and Roberta Elizabeth (Bryant) Cook, Sr.
She graduated from Brackenridge High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and a Purple Jacket. As a teenager, she worked in the print shop her father worked at and the candy department of a ten-cent store. Along the way, she had met her blue-eyed sailor, Med. After he returned from serving in the Navy during World War II, they married on Groundhog Day, February 2, 1946.
They had two children, Larry Wayne and Donna Gail. For a few years, the family lived in San Antonio and Ruth worked for the Air Force Security Service. They later moved to Stockdale, Texas, where Ruth helped her husband with their ranch and served as a room mother for her children’s classes.
A few years after Med’s passing in 1980, Ruth graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Southwest Texas University at the age of 57. She then volunteered as a social worker, and worked as a substitute teacher. Over the years, she also acted as a caretaker for several family members and kept many of her grandchildren.
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. Ruth was secretary/treasurer to the Steele Branch Cemetery for over twenty years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #69, serving in numerous offices, including Worthy Matron for two years. She also enjoyed gardening, traveling and using her computer.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband of thirty-four years, Medley Richard Childress, her parents and brother-in-law, Arnold Berry. She is survived by her son Larry Childress and wife Judy; daughter Donna Dixon and husband Herbert Maurice; grandchildren, Lance Childress and wife Jennifer, Larianne Hastings and husband David, Luke Childress, Bradley Dixon and wife Cathy, John Dixon and wife Christi and Kassie Dixon; great-grandchildren Houston, Clay, Jardyn, Hunter, Emma, Kade, Holden and Canyon; her brother “Junior,” Marvin Hill Cook Jr. and wife Naomi; sister “Patsy,” Patricia Berry; numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thanks to Peggy Peña for the loving care she provided for Ruth.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 5pm to 8pm at Finch Funeral Chapel of Stockdale, TX.
