Obituary for Norma P. Vickers (Prater)

Norma Ann Prater Vickers passed away on October 9, 2023, in Seguin, Texas. She was born to Narris Larkin Prater and Viola Edna Ecles Prater on October 31, 1932, in Luling, Texas at the Green Cross Sanatorium but spent most of her childhood in The Heights neighborhood of Houston, Texas and was graduated from what was then John H. Reagan High School in 1951.

Right out of high school she began working for Rollie, Jewett, & Beck, a men’s clothing store in Houston. Prudential Insurance soon moved to town, and she was hired by them to work in the mortgage loan department because she was going to night school and studying shorthand. On September 20, 1952, she married her first husband Lawrence Frederick Hall, her high school sweetheart. In 1956, he was drafted, and they moved to the state of Washington for a couple of years. While in Washington, she became pregnant with her daughter Lauren but moved back to Texas before she was born. Herson Russell was born a year and a half later. With two children to raise, Norma spent the next sixteen years being a housewife and stay-at-home mother. For seven years, she served as a Girl Scout Leader and enjoyed it immensely.

After her children were grown, Norma returned to the working world and worked for many years at a couple of nursing homes as a receptionist and secretary to the Director of Nursing. During this time, she returned to her educational endeavors and obtained her Administrator license. Unfortunately, in 1991, a new company purchased the nursing home at which she was working and brought in all new staff. Shortly after that, she and her husband moved to their place on Lake Livingston in Onalaska, Texas. There she worked for a local grocery store for a short time before going to work for the local Wal-Mart where she was employed for 20 years, retiring in 2011.

Unfortunately, in 2008, her first husband died then shortly after retiring she had surgery due to cancer. However, 1 week after retiring and just prior to her surgery, she attended her high school reunion and became acquainted with an old friend, Frederick Dale Vickers. He would drive from St. Hedwig to Onalaska and drive her to her chemotherapy treatments. About a year later, on May 13, 2012, Dale and she were married in La Vernia, Texas at La Vernia United Methodist Church.

Norma is preceded in death by her first husband Larence Frederick Hall; parents; brothers, Charles Prater and Eugene Prater. She is survived by her husband Dale; his three children, Terry Snipes and husband Robert; Stuart Vickers and wife Darda, and Karen Paris; grandchildren, Jessica Adams and husband Clay; Travis Vickers, Olivia Vickers, Eric Douglas, and Nicholas Paris; great-grandchildren, Cade, Brady, and Henry Adams; Norma’s children; daughter, Lauren Marchese and Husband Joseph; son, Russell Hall and wife Lisa; nieces, Penny Prater, Robin Kret and Husband Geoffrey; grandchildren, Jonathon Marchese and wife Jun Li, Gregory Marchese and wife Elizabeth, Clinton Marchese and wife Krissy, Chelsea Sheppard; great-grandchildren Lena Marchese, Leo Marchese, Lily Marchese, Gavin Marchese, William Marchese and Austin Sheppard; sister-in-law, Sandra Prater; nephew, Kelly Prater; numerous other loving family and many friends.
