Obituary for Matilda Erler (Neslony)

Matilda Neslony Erler has gone to her heavenly reward on August 27, 2021. She was born on March 13, 1927 on the family farm near Yorktown, Texas to Sigmund Anton Neslony, Sr. and Sophia Ledwig Neslony. She graduated Yorktown High School in 1945. While in high school, Matilda and her older sister, Rita would stay in town with their aunt during the weekdays and come home on the weekends because the roads were unpaved and very hard to travel on a daily basis. After graduating Matilda obtained her teaching certificate and taught school at a local two room school house until the enticement of big city living had her move to San Antonio to pursue a career at the Butane Gas & Equipment Company. She then married in 1949 and changed her career path to that of mother and grandmother.

Matilda loved very much being a grandmother and her days were always brightened by her grandchildren’s visits. She always wanted to know about her children’s activities and very much enjoyed their visits. She was very fond of the countryside where she grew up and enjoyed visits to the old house with her children. She liked tending to her patio plants. She enjoyed crafts and acrylic painting and became a modern day “Grandma Moses” by starting to paint while in her late seventies. She actually sold two of her paintings and there are over 16 others that are treasured by her children. She was a history buff and remembered many details up to her last year. Her favorite entertainment was watching PBS TV on history and travel. Though she traveled only a small amount before her children were born, she was an avid armchair traveler and could tell you the minutest details of lesser known countries.

Matilda is survived by her children: Richard Erler (Neen), Mary Schwartz (Larry), David Erler (Patti), Russ Erler and Martha Allen (Clark). Grandchildren: Robert Erler, Amanda Erler, Brandon Schwartz, Marissa Schwartz: Great-granddaughter, Charlotte West: Brother Sam Neslony (Agnes). Nieces: Traci Bennett (Jimmy), Norma Jean Real, and Mary Toman (Milam). She is preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Erler and siblings Johnny Neslony, Isabel Neslony, Norbert Neslony, Rita Neslony, Sigmund Neslony Jr. and Theresa Carrington.

Visitation will be 10:00 am Saturday, September 4, 2021, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Yorktown. Rosary will be recited at 10:30 am and the Mass will begin at 11:00 am with Father Francis Nguyen officiating.

She will be buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Yorktown Texas on the land her great-grandparents, Anton and Luci Kozielski deeded to the Catholic Church on February 1, 1867.
