Obituary for Marie Gerlich (Mueller)

Marie Gerlich (Mueller)
Marie Gerlich passed away on December 15, 2015 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 73 years. Marie was born on September 29, 1942 in Seguin, Texas to Henry L. and Irma (Helmke) Mueller. On August 25, 1962 she married Theo “Sonny” Gerlich in St. Hedwig, Texas. Marie graduated from La Vernia High School in 1960 and then received her Bachelor's Degree from Texas Lutheran College and her Master's Degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. Marie enjoyed a career with La Vernia ISD for over 30 years. During her tenure, she worked as a substitute teacher, teacher, Elementary Principal and in 2002 retired as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum. After retirement from the school district, she decided it was time to give more back to her church and community. In 2003, she became the Chairman of the Advisory Board of Directors for the La Vernia Historical Association. She volunteered at St. Ann’s Catholic Church doing church linens, decorating for special occasions and serving as the Director of Religious Education. Marie served as a member on the Wilson County Appraisal Review Board and in 2010 she became a member of the La Vernia City Council, serving the community where she had lived all her life. She has served on and off for 4 1/2 years and is the current Mayor Pro Temp for the City of La Vernia. Marie loved doing service for the school, the church and for the community. However, her favorite "job" was being Nana to her 7 grandchildren. Marie is preceded in death by her parents. She will be missed dearly by her husband of 53 years, Sonny Gerlich of La Vernia, as well as her children, Dwayne Gerlich of New Braunfels, Bryan Gerlich and wife Krista of Colleyville, Cheryl Barron and husband Kenneth of La Vernia; grandchildren, Brig and Brock Gerlich, Bryn and Brayden Gerlich, and Michael, Dylan, and Kyla Barron; sister, Maxine Wunderlich of New Braunfels; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The Gerlich family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to the Texas Liver Institute and to the doctors, nurses and staff at University Hospital. During the last week of her life, Marie had the best care the family could have asked for. They not only took care of Marie, they also made sure that the entire family was taken care of and had the support that they needed. There will be a visitation on Friday, December 18, 2015 from 5:00-8:00pm at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in La Vernia, Texas, with reciting of the Rosary at 7:00pm. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, December 19, 2015, 10:00am at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Father Stanley Fuik will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery. You are welcome to sign the online guestbook at www.finchfuneralchapels.com. Arrangement entrusted to Finch Funeral Chapel, L.L.C., (830) 779-1090.
