Obituary for Margaret Skrobarczyk Lenz

Margaret Skrobarczyk Lenz passed peacefully on July 14, 2020 at 94. She was called M by her beloved husband Art, Mom by six children, Memaw by 16 grandchildren, Mag by nine siblings and Maggie by friends. We called her by different names, but we all loved her. She is remembered for her strong faith, baking, sense of humor, and yes, strong will. She was a firm believer in the power of prayer and prided herself in attending mass and saying the rosary often. She always had a tray of your favorite desert for your birthday, the holidays and weekly poker game with close friends. Her cherry cheesecake, pumpkin squares, German choc cake, mustang grape jelly were family favorites and a source of fond memories. Margaret enjoyed being active throughout her life, coordinating coop meals and reunions, playing bingo and card games and bowling.
Margaret was born June 8, 1926, on the John Paul and Mary (Mami Sowa) family farm in Stockdale. After graduating from HS, Margaret worked at Federal Reserve Bank in San Antonio and trucking co in Corpus Christi. She met Art Lenz at a dance & they continued to dance together for 48 years of marriage. In their early years, they traveled to NM and throughout Texas with Art’s Zachry job, returning to San Antonio in the late 60’s, eventually moving to their ranch in Sutherland Springs and starting their own construction business in the mid-70s. Margaret was always active, working with the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce, volunteering at church as a Eucharistic minister and she was instrumental in starting Habitat for Humanity in La Vernia and was their first President. After Art’s death in 1998, Margaret moved to San Antonio where she continued bowling leagues, church ministry delivering communion to nursing homes and was a member of St. Matthew’s Legion of Mary. Her friends knew her as a serious poker player and fun loving. In the last year, she taught others in her care community to play card games and up until recently, still carried her little red coin box to poker games.
Margaret is preceded in death by her husband Art and her oldest son Arthur Lenz. She is survived by children Linda Kurtz (Roddy), Robert (Sydney), Mike (Janice), Joe (Arless) and John (Michelle) Lenz, 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many loved nieces and nephews.
