Obituary for John T. Grammer

John Thomas Grammer of Kennard, Texas died Monday April 1, 2024, in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born April 4, 1932, in Atascosa County to Dexter Tipps Grammer and Evie Jane Wallace Grammer.

John attended school at La Parita in Jourdanton, Atascosa County Texas. After serving in the military for three years he was discharged at Ft. Mead, Maryland and returned to Atascosa County and began working in the oil fields. He married Barbara Patronella of Harris County, Texas. After marrying they moved to La Vernia and eventually built their home on Kyle Street. To this union were born three children, Donald Grammer, Cynthia Grammer, and Pamela Grammer.

John worked in the oil fields for many years, and eventually with investors purchased and successfully developed the Linne Oilfield near Sutherland Springs.

In 1989 he married Shirley Hill-McClain from Crockett, Texas. Shirley moved to La Vernia where she and John spent many years doing historical work. John was instrumental in doing historical research, cemetery restoration and attaining numerous historical markers for Wilson County. He enjoyed this work immensely. John and Shirley were appointed by Judge Marvin Quinney to serve on the 2010 Sesquicentennial Committee. He received the prestigious builders award by the Brahman Masonic lodge in La Vernia.

He was an honest and patriotic man loved by all John Grammer was kind, humble, and generous, to all who knew him. His words were good on a handshake.

After retirement John and Shirley moved to Kennard, located deep in the piney woods of East Texas. There he invested and worked tirelessly to beautify and contribute to his community.

John was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara Patronella- Grammer, two children, Donald and Pamela, his parents Dexter Grammer and Evie Jane Wallace Grammer, siblings Clara Grammer-Blalock, Valdese Grammer Scott-Rutherford, Arvilla Grammer- Hoyack, Dexter T. Grammer Jr, Jay Grammer, and Doris Grammer Brooks.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Shirley Grammer, his daughter Cynthia Cover, stepdaughter Michelle Rowe and husband Keith, grandchildren Nicholas Uhlig, Michael Mylonas, J.T. Grammer II, Mason Cover and wife Jennifer, and Lorinda Vaclavik; great grandchildren Sam Blunder, Maggie Fine, and Averie Rose Cover, and beloved special friends Edward and Gail Uhlig.

Services will be held at Finch Funeral Chapel, La Vernia, Thursday, April 4, 2024. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM with services starting at 11:00 AM officiated by Keith Johanson.

Interment will follow in Concrete Cemetery, in La Vernia, Texas.

Pallbearers are Edward Uhlig, Nicholas Uhlig, Michael Mylonas, J.T. Grammer, II, Mason Cover and Keith Rowe.
Honorary pallbearers are Marvin Quinney, Allen Kosub, Jim Burdette, and Perry Rutland.
