Obituary for James P. Meuth Sr.

On Sunday, July 9, 2023, James (Jim) P. Meuth, Sr. passed away peacefully in La Vernia, Texas. James was born on February 26, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas to Frank P. and Margaret (Stall) Meuth, who precedes him in death along with his wife, Betty Ann Meuth, and son, Charlie Meuth.

Jim was a little brother to Ervin, Margie, Gerry, Irene, Evelyn, Joyce, and a couple of years later became big brother to Bernice. All who have preceded him to their lives with our Lord.

Jim is survived by his children, Diane Pearce (Kenneth), Debra Brandt (Mike), Donna Schrank (Rick), and James Meuth Jr. (Tamara); grandchildren, Jennifer Gregory (Adam), Emily Guerra (Erick), Charlie Meuth (Ellie), Tiffany Doege (Dustin), Garrett Brandt (Dakota), Jonathan Bukowski, Allison Schramm (Brandon), MaKayla Meuth, Emma Meuth, and LilyAnne Meuth; great-grandchildren, Kloe Bukowski, Kenley Doege, Blakely Gregory, Fynn Bukowski, Layne Brandt, Bristol Gregory, Kane Doege, Brodie Brandt, and Jett Bukowski.

Jim was raised on the east side of San Antonio and went to St. Gerard Catholic School from 1st – 12th grade and graduated in 1957. Jim was quite the athlete in high school and would have gone on to play college football, however an injury ended that. It was during his time at St. Gerard that he met the love of his life, and they married on July 5, 1958. This year was their 65th wedding anniversary.

Jim spent 37 years with CPS Energy. It was during this time he met some of his closest friends and spent many years playing softball, even going on to play one year in the Senior Olympics and winning the gold.
If he wasn’t playing softball, you would find Jim in a boat at one of the area lakes as he was an avid bass fisherman. He was one of the founding members of the Alamo Bass Club. He spent many weekends with his best fishing partner Bret Wetherell who he affectionately referred to as Buda.

And if he wasn’t fishing you may find him on the deer lease in Fredericksburg. He was on the same lease for over 40+ years. So, if Jim wasn’t on the ballfield, in a boat, or in a deer blind, you would probably find him at the gym where he worked out 5-7 days a week.

Jim eventually retired from CPS Energy in 1995 but that did not last long so he went back to work with Pike Electric and Chain Electric and finally retired in March of 2020 at the age of 82. Jim worked because he liked to stay busy, but he always said he worked for his family.

You could also always find him on the sidelines coaching or in the bleachers watching his grandchildren. This led him to becoming one of the biggest fans of the La Vernia Lady Bears Volleyball and Basketball teams and for many years where you could find him with his spiral notebook keeping stats on the girls. He has countless souvenir balls the girls have given him over the years.

Jim lost the love of his life in 2004 and it was after that someone convinced him, or more like dragged him to his first Men’s ACTS Retreat through St. Jerome’s. It was during this time he began to continue to grow closer to Christ. This was also the steppingstone to why he is known by so many today as Jimbo or Grandpa Jimbo. Someone said it best when they referred to him as the community’s grandpa. He spent many spring breaks and summers with the youth of St. Ann on ACTS Retreat. He was instrumental in helping so many continue forming their relationship with Jesus and was a great example to them. He will forever be known for his excitement by his jumping up and down saying “Jesus I Trust In You”

Jim’s family cannot even begin to express our sincere love and gratitude to Debbie and Ray Phillips for the love and care they provided to our dad these past few months. When they say there are angels walking among us and doing God’s work that is Debbie and Ray.

Jim said the following words to everyone as he left their presence “May the good Lord bless you and take a liking to you and always stay humble and kind.”

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, 4:00pm-8:00pm, with Rosary at 7:00pm, at Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia, Texas. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 14, 2023, 1:00pm, at St. Ann Catholic Church in La Vernia. Interment will follow at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Martinez.
