Obituary for Doris Evelyn Marsh (Meneley)

Doris Evelyn (Meneley) Marsh, born August 28, 1922 (to a family of 6 brothers and 5 sisters), to Sion William and Josie (Williams) Meneley in Gonzales County, TX. She went to her Heavenly home on January 18, 2024, at the age of 101.

Evelyn was born at Sion’s ranch house (700 acres) in Gonzales County, Texas. She was the 11th child of Sion William and Josie Meneley. She went to school at Nickel, a country school.
She honorably served in the U.S Army and was a nurse in the WAC in World War II. She received an honorable discharge in 1945. Evelyn met her husband at Kelley Field where she worked in 1945. Evelyn and Clyde loved to dance so they went each Friday to a dance. Clyde’s buddies bet him she wouldn’t date him. They were married for 54 years.

She married Clyde R. Marsh, Sr. in 1945. They lived in Panama where Clyde worked for the airlines, and then Clyde was transferred to Miami, Florida. While there Evelyn applied for her GED and received it in Dade County. After returning to Texas, she was blessed with two sons, Clyde R. Marsh, Jr. and William James Marsh. She graduated from Alvin Junior College on August 31, 1970 and received her RN degree. She moved to San Antonio in 1977, when her husband transferred there, and worked at various hospitals and nursing homes. The last place was Country Care Manor in La Vernia at the age of 72 years, where she loved the work there. She retired after her husband was diagnosed with dementia.

Mrs. Marsh was a member of First Baptist Church, La Vernia. Evelyn was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Worthy Matron in La Vernia in 1989 to 1990, and in San Antonio at Alamo Lagos Star in 1995 to 1996. She belonged to the Lone Star Fiddlers Association and loved to dance and watch the musicians play. In November of 1996 she went to Branson, Missouri with this group. She was well traveled and had visited Europe, Switzerland, England, Australia, and Alaska, but enjoyed the bus tour to Branson the most.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde R. Marsh, Sr.; two infant daughters; her parents, Sion and Josie Meneley; five sisters; six brothers. She is survived by her sons, Clyde R. Marsh, Jr. (Nell) and William James Marsh (Bennett); two grandchildren, Trey Marsh and Jana Caldwell (Adam); great-granddaughter, Krissy Leigh; great-grandson, Colby; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Evelyn will be cremated, and her cremains will be taken to Stockdale Cemetery for a Graveside Service at a future date.
