Obituary for CSM, John D. Chapman, U.S. Army, Retired

CSM, John D. Chapman, U.S. Army, Retired, a resident of La Vernia, Texas, entered into eternal rest on September 18, 2015, at the age of 86.

John was born on December 30, 1928 to Marion C. and Sadie Antoinette (Dargan) Chapman in Pittsburgh, PA.

He honorably served and retired from the United States Army after 30 years of service. After completing basic training at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, he was assigned to the following duty stations:  Kaiserslautern, Germany, Korea, Iran, Vietnam and other state side units.

John was awarded numerous Commendation Medals: Vietnam Campaign and Service Medals, Army Accommodation Medal (1st OLC), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal Clasp (4th Award), Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar, National Defense Service Medal (with OLC), Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal.

John retired from the United States Army, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas in 1974.  After a short retirement, John started a new company, known today as Chapman Refrigeration.  John successfully owned and operated Chapman Refrigeration until January 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elieen Chapman Tomecek and Marion Chapman Verschare of Pittsburgh, PA.  John is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Mary Mann Chapman of La Vernia, TX; children, Jana Hanlon and husband Dale of New Braunfels, TX, Ronald Chapman and wife Sylvia of Houston, TX, Rhonda Chapman of Seguin, TX, and Kim Kiolbassa of Schertz, TX; grandchildren, Tyler R. Hanlon of San Antonio, TX, Erica Michelle Hanlon of Austin, TX; Ronnie Chapman and wife Judith of Houston, TX, Christina Chapman-Reynolds and husband John of Houston, TX, Tyler Kiolbassa of San Antonio, TX, Ashley Kiolbassa of Dallas, TX, and McKenna Aparicio of Schertz, TX; great-grandchildren Emma Denise Reynolds and Hailey Denise Reynolds of Houston, TX; sister Lynnette Chapman Clause of Pittsburg, Pa.  

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Finch Funeral Chapel- La Vernia, TX and a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. that same evening at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in La Vernia, TX. Father Stan Fiuk will officiate the Mass. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors. In Lieu of Flowers donations can be made to Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home, 200 Veterans Dr., Floresville, TX 78114.
