Obituary for Carlie Louise Hopkins (Case)

Carlie “Louise” Hopkins peacefully passed January 19, 2021. She lived a full and joyful life which began in Garrison, Tx on February 11, 1932. She was the first-born child of Grover Eugene Case and Lillie Clifton Case. Louise’s death was proceeded by her parents, her husband Selmer Hopkins, her son Gene Wortham Hopkins and her Great Grandchild Phillip Hopkins, Jr. She is survived by her children Lester Blackmon, David Ray Hopkins and wife Sharon, Carolyn Tebry and husband Yehia, and Kenneth Dale Hopkins and wife Sharon. Also surviving her is Gene Hopkins’ spouse Paula Hopkins. Her long life gave her the great joy of seeing her family grow to a large family of 13 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren. Louise lived her early life in Garrison, Tx and her teen years in Houston, Tx. She married at a young age and that marriage gave her a son, Lester. In 1951 she married Selmer Hopkins and together they had 3 sons David, Gene and Kenneth and her daughter Carolyn. During those years she enjoyed traveling the United States on many road trips with many of those car trips being between Texas and California. Every road trip was an adventure never knowing where the next stop would be or where the new home would be. Every roadside park was a kitchen, and the car was a bed for the night. Louise always made sure that her children were full and ready for dreaming under the stars. Anyone who had the privilege of meeting Louise always knew she was a strong woman and did whatever she had to for her family. Always working she did everything from picking cotton to waitressing. Whenever there was no job to be found she would make sure she had one by opening a small restaurant. Her final job was the hardest of her life and that was caring for her husband in the final months of his life at home. She would not allow someone else to take care of him, not even after losing his leg to diabetes. She cared for him until his death in 2005. Although she thought the death of her beloved husband would be the hardest event she would endure her strength was challenged again in 2011 when her son, Gene, was taken from her in a wreck. It was her strength that held the family together and helped his wife and children. Shortly after that she moved to Seguin, Tx where she once again started to enjoy her life. She started going every week to play dominoes and always was making something good for the potluck. She made several trips with her friends, son, and daughter gambling. Her gambling trips took her to Louisiana, Las Vegas and Laughlin. She took a trip with friends to Branson, MO and even went back to California with 2 of her great- grandchildren this time enjoying Disneyland. She spent time in Port Aransas and South Padre with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She even enjoyed the 2 cruises she went on and surprised us all by drinking us under the table in Mexico and joining all of us on a jet boat ride. The last years of her life were devoted to her constant companions Missy and Jinger. No dog could have asked for a better life than she gave them and as Alzheimer’s started to control her life, they never left her side. To sum it all up - Louise lived life by her terms and apologized to no one. She was loved by her family and admired by all. She fought to the end showing just how stubborn a Hopkins can be. The family thanks Remarkable Healthcare of Seguin for taking care of her the last days of her life and giving her the dignity she deserved. Due to the current COVID situation the family is having a graveside service only. In leu of flowers or attending a service, anyone wanting to honor her life please donate to the Animal Rescue or Humane Society of your choice.
