Obituary for Alton Kuykendall

Alton Ernest Kuykendall returned to the Lord Saturday, October 16, 2021, at the age of 86 years. He was born to Elmer Ernest and Ethel May Kuykendall on June 12, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Roy Delton Kuykendall, Elmer Brian Kuykendall and Jack Wayne Kuykendall; grandson, Matthew Embrey and son-in-law, Mark Embrey.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Pat Kuykendall; 2 daughters, Cheryl Embrey and Pam Kuykendall; 2 granddaughters, Christy Ritchey and husband Brian, Melissa Rauch and husband Sam; 2 great-grandsons, Braden Alton Ritchey and Randall Neal Ritchey; sister, Gail Thomas and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alton wore many different hats during his lifetime including carpenter, building contractor (he built his own home in Wilson County). He was ordained a minister in 1962 and served the Lord in this capacity until his death. He also was a building inspector for the G.C. Murphy Company. After the age of 50, Alton earned his teaching certification from Southwest Texas State University and taught Industrial Technology and drove a school bus route for 19 years at Floresville Middle School.

After retirement, he continued his ranching activities and designed and built a hydraulic lift trailer to move deer blinds and windmills. He maintained a large garden and fruit orchard and shared the bounty of his labor with family and friends. He loved to hunt deer and feral hogs. He also cut and baled his own hay.

Alton served on the state board of the Independent Cattlemen's Association of Texas and was active in the Wilson County Republican Party of Texas.

Alton never met a stranger, and he never failed to have stories to share with one and all.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2021, 1:00pm-2:00pm, at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon, Texas.

Burial will follow at Union Valley Cemetery in Union Valley, Texas. Brother Don Hessong will be officiant of the services. Serving as Pallbearers will be Brian Ritchey, Sam Rauch, Norman Coleman, Jack Tondre, Ronnie Tondre, and Carlos Bermea. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers are Braden Ritchey and Randall Ritchey. If desired, donations may be made in Alton's name to the charity of the donor's choice.
