Obituary for Harold Eugene Burnett

Harold Eugene Burnett
Gene Burnett, beloved father and grandfather, passed from this life into eternal rest on September 10, 2017, in Cuero, Texas. He was born December 2, 1934, in Pilgrim to Sam Houston Jr. and Fannie Elizabeth Lowry Burnett. He married Virginia Ann “Ginner” Bundick on December 17, 1955, in Smiley where they made their home.

Gene is preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his paternal grandparents, Sam Houston and Mattie Jane Anderson Burnett; and maternal grandparents, Walter Eugene and Letha Light Lowry.

Gene was a rancher and a real “true cowboy” for many years. He and Ginner spent lots of time fishing and camping. He also loved to hunt, dance, and attend track meets. Gene was a faithful member of the Smiley Baptist Church. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Debbie Burnett, David and Janie Burnett, Dickey Ray and Tracye Burnett, Donna and Theron Vasbinder; his grandchildren: Dusty Jonas, Houston and Bridgette Burnett, Clay and Sarah Burnett, Layne Hicks, Aimee Jonas, Luke and Amber Hicks; as well as two great-grandchildren, T.C. and Bentlie Burnett; cousins: Mary Jo Dzierzanowski, Sam Burnett, Jeannie Moon; and a host of friends to mourn Gene’s passing.

A Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church in Smiley on Wednesday, September 13, at 11:00am with the Rev. Marvin Miles officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 100, Smiley, TX 78159.
